who most recently played for your Los Angeles Lakers during several of the 2021–2022 and 2021–2023 seasons (often playing centre, out of position. With one month remaining in the 2023–24 NBA season, he signed a new deal with his first NBA team (in both Frank Vogel and Darvin Ham’s offences).Michael Scotto of HoopsHype has learned via sources that Gabriel is agreeing to a 10-day contract—likely a hardship deal—with the Memphis Grizzlies, who are headed to the lottery.
For the most part of the year, Gabriel has been with the Wisconsin Herd, the G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks, in the hopes of being called up to the major leagues. He has his chance now. This season, the 6’9″ Kentucky product averaged 14.9 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game while playing for the Herd in 40 NBAGL games.
He played for the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, and lastly the Lakers during the 2021–22 season. That season, he averaged 6.7 points on 50.5% shooting from the field, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.6 steals in 19 games (five of which he started).
The Purple and Gold signed Gabriel to a non-guaranteed minimum contract for the 2022–2023 season. After all, he wasn’t really useful as a backup centre when LA made a late playoff push, which is why team president Rob Pelinka signed Tristan Thompson to a contract in advance of the play-in round and the playoffs.
Playing exclusively as a five in 68 regular season games that year, Gabriel averaged 5.5 points on 59.6% shooting from the field, 4.2 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, and 0.5 dimes.
