Fulham star’s withdrawal from the Mali match deals a serious blow to the Super Eagles.
The former Rangers player has been a mainstay for both the team and the nation in recent months,
but he will miss some time due to injury.
Due to an injury, Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey
will not be able to play for Nigeria against Mali and will need to travel back to England for more testing, according to Soccernet.ng.
Since moving to Fulham for the 2018–19 season, Bassey has been a mainstay for the Super Eagles. Since making his debut in March 2022 under head coach Gernot Rohr, the Nigerian has been a consistent member of the squad.
Additionally, he performed admirably for the Super Eagles in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, which saw Nigeria take second in Cote d’Ivoire.
26 players, including Bassey, were called up to play for Nigeria against Ghana and Mali during their international break. The 24-year-old defender, though, was on the bench for the full ninety minutes. Still, the Super Eagles prevailed 2-1 in the match.
He would have been eligible to start Tuesday’s match against Mali, but he will have to wait to obtain another cap as Bassey will be returning to Fulham for more testing and treatment due to an injury, according to Fulham Fan News.
Although Bassey’s injury is not known to be severe, a long-term injury would be devastating for Fulham. With nine games remaining, the team is now ranked 12th in the Premier League. They will be hoping to finish well and most likely secure a trip to Europe.
Coach Finidi George is hoping that Bassey will be well enough to play against South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
