Red Sox Make Notable Move To Add Pitcher To Roster

Chase Anderson was officially signed by Boston on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Red Sox officially announced that Lucas Giolito will not be pitching for Boston for some time.

The Red Sox declared Giolito was placed on the 60-day disabled list four days prior to the team’s Opening Day game in Seattle. The veteran right-hander Chase Anderson, who signed a major league one-year contract with Boston on Sunday, needed a spot on the roster, so the move was made to make room for him.

Naturally, it was obvious that Giolito would be out of the mound for some time without the need for an official designation. The 29-year-old had surgery earlier this month to fix damage to his throwing elbow’s ulnar collateral ligament. However, Giolito was able to avoid having a Tommy John procedure, so his recovery from a significant elbow injury shouldn’t take as long as it usually does to get back to the diamond.Anderson, on the other hand, arrived at the Red Sox Opening Day roster in an unusual way. Prior to joining Boston less than a week before the regular season began, the 36-year-old participated in spring training with the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies. Although Anderson has 200 major league starts under his belt, he is expected to begin the season as a multi-inning reliever for Alex Cora and company.

The Boston team will play three more spring training games before traveling to T-Mobile Park on Thursday to take on the opposition.
